In the UK VAT has just been increased to 20% who knows where it’s heading. The troubles in the Middle East and Africa are pushing the price of oil up to unprecedented highs and yet many employers are still laying staff off, instead of giving their workers much-needed pay increases. With the ever-increasing cost of living, many of us everyday folks are looking for a way to make money easy without having to work too hard or spend time away from our beloved families. Setting up a small business is the most popular and often the most successful way to earn an additional income, with the internet being a priceless tool to enable access to the right markets. But research is essential and there are a few steps that one needs to follow in order to successfully set up a small business using the internet.

One of the steps is to do enough research to ensure that there is actually a market for the product of service you wish to offer. It is all too easy to find something that YOU like and decide to sell, but that is not the best route to success. One must look at the market objectively and without emotions. Think about what the market needs, and not what would be fun to sell or nice to look at. Selling something unfashionable like fertilizer at a good profit with little competition is a far better business idea than selling the latest mobile phone with a lot of competition and therefore very little mark up.

Another step is to make sure that others have not tried and failed before you. There could be plenty of good reasons for what appears to be a sure-fire business idea not succeeding. Look at the failure of others and learn from it. Maybe it is an important lesson to not try that particular product or service in that market, or just a warning of how to do things differently. It is rarely simple or quick to make money easy, but one may be surprised to know just how many weird ideas can make millions. Thinking of something completely new is very helpful, but not vital. Copying many others is unlikely to earn you much money easily, unless the product or service that you want to offer stands out as vastly superior to the others in that market. You just have to be sure to do enough research to see where and how others may have failed.

In conclusion, there are plenty of opportunities and almost as many reasons to try to earn a little extra money or even change one’s career to work with some kind of small business. The cost of living is getting higher and higher and the number of people selling online is also increasing. However, being down-hearted is not the answer. Careful though and research can give rise to wonderful opportunities to offset the increasing price of everything we buy. Good luck with all your future ventures.
